CORONAVIRUS LETTER

Dear Cavalier Patrons, 

The Bon Homme School District’s top priority is the health and safety of our students, families and communities. With the Coronavirus making its way into South Dakota, we want to update you on the measures taken to help protect the health and safety of our students, families, and communities from the virus. As a District, the following steps are being taken: 

· Students are being encouraged to more frequently wash their hands with soap and water for at least twenty seconds.

· Students are instructed to cough/sneeze in the crook of their elbow.

· Students are being reminded to not touch their eyes, nose or mouth.

· Hand sanitizers are made available for easy access.

· All staff will be instructed to diligently clean and wipe desks, tables, door knobs, keyboards, computers, etc.

· All non-essential school related activities will be postponed until further notice.

· Custodians will conduct a thorough disinfecting process this weekend, so school sites will be shut down until Monday morning.

If your student is ill, please keep them home. Students need to be free of fever for twenty-four hours without fever reduction medication. 

We will be working with the South Dakota Department of Health, Bon Homme County Health Nurse, and the CDC as we deal with these evolving challenges in South Dakota. We will also keep parents informed as more information is available.

Materials to be picked up

This week students should be working on the educational materials provided in their current packets. The completed work for the week of Monday, March 23rd through Thursday, March 26th maybe be dropped off at a student's respective school on Monday, March 30th from 7:00 am - 1:00 pm. In Tabor, the drop off is the elementary commons. For Springfield, it is the west entrance of the elementary school. For Tyndall Elementary and Middle/High School students, drop offs will occur in the elementary commons. At that time, students will receive packets for the week of March 30th - April 3rd.


Middle school laptop computers have been prepared for students who currently do not have access to a home computer. These may be picked up during the packet exchange time frame. Computers will be available in the commons area. A usage agreement will need to be signed by the parents before a computer is taken home.


Any computer needing repair may also be dropped off during the packet exchange period. Computers will be repaired in an appropriate time frame. Once repairs are completed, students will be notified. They may then pick up the repaired computer up on the next packet exchange date.

Mrs. Stewart Guidance Hours

Mrs. Stewart Guidance Hours Starting Monday, March 23

I will have office hours from 7am-8am and 7pm-8pm daily. During this time I will be available for Zoom meetings or phone calls with students as needed. Students should email me first so that we can set up a time to Zoom. I will be limiting these meetings to 10-20 minutes. I realize the hours are strange, please keep in mind that my children do not have daycare during the day and my husband is in the heart of calving season, so bear with me! I am checking my email frequently during the day, so please feel free to email me at any time!

Parents: if your son or daughter has concern for another student (for whatever reason) and you’re unsure what to do or who to call, calling the sheriffs dept/police is a great place to start. They can do a well check on any child or family as needed!

Some procedures we will follow in school are:

1. Hand sanitizer is located in Tabor and Springfield classrooms.  Sanitizers will be placed in common areas of the Tyndall elementary, middle and high schools.

2. Custodial will continue disinfecting procedures in common areas, as normal. 

3. We are in the process of purchasing spray bottles to hold a disinfectant solution.  They will be placed in each classrooms so teacher, can spray classroom surfaces down at the end of each day.

The weather system for weather related announcements is called BrightArrow. 

If school is dismissed early or cancelled for the day, there will be no school or non school activities held for the day.

Alumni Addresses Please!

The District Office is collecting names and addresses of alumni from Springfield, Tabor, and Tyndall from 1950-Present for a mailing list. If you or any family member (your parents or their family members, your siblings or your children) graduated from one of the schools, please send name(s), address, and year of graduation to Bon Homme School Alumni List, PO Box 28, Tyndall, SD 57066 or email to karla.schoenfish@k12.sd.us. Please include maiden name if married. Also, please note "deceased" by the name if they have passed away. Keys Needed, Please!

If you are not a current Bon Homme employee and are in possession of any school key (Building, Gym, Classroom, etc.) from any site (Springfield, Tabor, Tyndall, and the Colony), please notify the District Office at (605) 589-3388 Ext. 1000.

Gold Cards

As a form of appreciation and thanks to the senior citizens of the District as well as Grandparents of Bon Homme students, the Bon Homme School Board provides a “Gold Card” activity ticket program. Residents of the Bon Homme School District and Grandparents of Bon Homme students who are 62 years of age or older are eligible to receive a senior citizen Gold Card.

The Gold Card will enable our senior citizens and Grandparents to attend all home events free of charge. This will include concerts, school plays, and sporting events; however, football playoffs, tournaments, and the musical are not included. This is a lifetime pass and does not need to be renewed each year. If you have misplaced or damaged your current card, we’d be happy to replace it for you.

Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) (20 U.S.C. § 1232g; 34 CFR Part 99) is a Federal law that protects the privacy of student education records. The law applies to all schools that receive funds under an applicable program of the U.S. Department of Education.

FERPA gives parents certain rights with respect to their children's education records. These rights transfer to the student when he or she reaches the age of 18 or attends a school beyond the high school level. Students to whom the rights have transferred are "eligible students."

  • Parents or eligible students have the right to inspect and review the student's education records maintained by the school. Schools are not required to provide copies of records unless, for reasons such as great distance, it is impossible for parents or eligible students to review the records. Schools may charge a fee for copies.

  • Parents or eligible students have the right to request that a school correct records which they believe to be inaccurate or misleading. If the school decides not to amend the record, the parent or eligible student then has the right to a formal hearing. After the hearing, if the school still decides not to amend the record, the parent or eligible student has the right to place a statement with the record setting forth his or her view about the contested information.

  • Generally, schools must have written permission from the parent or eligible student in order to release any information from a student's education record. However, FERPA allows schools to disclose those records, without consent, to the following parties or under the following conditions (34 CFR § 99.31):

    • School officials with legitimate educational interest;
    • Other schools to which a student is transferring;
    • Specified officials for audit or evaluation purposes;
    • Appropriate parties in connection with financial aid to a student;
    • Organizations conducting certain studies for or on behalf of the school;
    • Accrediting organizations;
    • To comply with a judicial order or lawfully issued subpoena;
    • Appropriate officials in cases of health and safety emergencies; and
    • State and local authorities, within a juvenile justice system, pursuant to specific State law.

Schools may disclose, without consent, "directory" information such as a student's name, address, telephone number, date and place of birth, honors and awards, and dates of attendance. However, schools must tell parents and eligible students about directory information and allow parents and eligible students a reasonable amount of time to request that the school not disclose directory information about them. Schools must notify parents and eligible students annually of their rights under FERPA. The actual means of notification (special letter, inclusion in a PTA bulletin, student handbook, or newspaper article) is left to the discretion of each school.
